Review: Shattered Promises by J R Grant (Review by PJ)

In a perfect world, Lani Foster had it all; wonderful, supportive parents, two adorable little boys, an amazing husband whom she loved fiercely, and an unbreakable bond with her best friend, Parker, no one can tear apart.

But Lani never realized being happy would cost her years of pain, until tragedy strikes the Foster family, leaving her left hanging by a thread, questioning everything around her.
Lies are exposed and secrets are brought to surface, destroying the one person who just wanted to feel loved- to be happy.

What do you do when you find out your marriage was nothing but a lie? Do you stand by the one person who abolishes your world? Or do you let go, and leave everything behind to start all over again?

Shattered Promises is about learning how to survive after the storm pulls you away. Everyone deserves a second chance to be happy, it's finding the special one to stand by your side and hold you in the rain.

Okay let me say this first... For Grant's first book, she knocked this one clear out of the park and maybe the parking lot!  Okay that said let's move into the story.

You start out with a Prologue that has you taking a shuttered breath with the intensity of the emotions that Grant was able to elicit from the reader (me). Lani is broken. But it's more than that really. Have you ever wondered how much you miss that sits right at the end of your nose? Sometimes we focus so much on the what's in front of us or behind us that we miss what sits there at the tip of our nose.

Now, being a person who can relate to this story in a way, there were parts that had me in tears. What made it possible was Grant's incredible ability to describe the characters emotions without drowning me in details. I love knowing what my characters are seeing and feeling, but I don't need to know down to the speck of dust that fell to the ground. Grant gave me just enough to set me up and allowed me to fill in the rest. Because she was able to pull this off, it allowed me to fully dive into the story.

Okay all that aside, Lani marries the man that at first meeting she HATES. He was a best friend of her best friend, Parker. Oh, Parker. Talk about a loyal, caring, loving, seriously good looking man. If I had a best friend like that I'd certainly keep an EXTRA eye (and maybe more LMAO!!!) on him.

Tragedy hits Lani when she's already weak. Things haven't been picture perfect in her life for a while, not that she's told anyone that. Not even her best friend. After that... nothing is the same and Lani starts losing herself.

Parker who has loved her for so long, but never spoke on it, has to make a choice. Does he tell Lani everything he's finding out about Kade, her husband and his best friend? If he tells her, he'll be the one breaking her and he'd never dream of hurting her.  Eventually the decision is made for Parker.

GAH! For Lani she feels like she's been tossed out to sea with no life jacket. She's drowning and at times isn't even sure she wants to keep going.  The strength that eminates from Parker has my heart skipping a beat. Parker truly would have walked into the flames of hell if it'd save Lani any pain. I  loved loved loved Parker. hahahaha

JR Grant did such an amazing job on this book. It will leave you breathless, tear stricken, hopeful and so much more. I can't recommend this book enough. JR Grant has quickly jumped into my "Must Watch Authors" list and I can't wait to read more from her. If you haven't read this book, I can't stress what a heart touching story you are missing. If you've ever been loved and lied to, you can seriously relate to this book. If you haven't.... Hello there's Parker... need I say more? LMAO!!!!!!!

Darkness Deserved

Friday night at the bar was busy. Every table was full all night and the bar was packed as well. I couldn’t have been happier. It was ten o’clock as I was making my rounds through the crowd checking tables and helping Emma, Beth and Mya, my waitresses, out.

I had just finished setting down a round of shots at a table full of sorority girls and turned around to go back to the bar, when I felt a tingle start at the top of my head and move toward my groin. When it settled and my clit began to throb I just knew. I knew it was my Adonis.

Here at last.

Dammit.

I was hoping I could just go through life without this temptation. It’s okay Harper. You wore your big girl panties tonight so quit being such a fucktwat and grow a pair. I make my way to the bar as if I notice nothing and set the tray down for Mark and Rory, my bartenders tonight.

I head towards the end of the bar to take care of some orders I need to make, when I feel his presence beating against me from behind. It’s like he already owns my body. My skin begins to tingle, my heartbeat speeds up, and my breathing becomes shallow as I try to control it. I can feel the vein in my neck throbbing relentlessly. On the outside I know I appear composed and nonchalant, but inside- inside- I feel ready to burst.

I just want Adonis to grab me, throw me on the bar and fill me as I know only he can at this moment. He brings both arms around me so that his hands are resting on the bar and he has me trapped between it and himself. He leans in and I can feel his breath wash over my exposed neck. I inhale his scent: soap, Armani and Adonis. God, I want him to bend me over. A million different scenarios run through my mind of how to close down the bar so I can please this man.

And that’s when I stop and ice runs through my veins. I spent four years pleasing men. I was not going down that path again.

MY REVIEW

Ok so I read the first book loved it and couldn't wait until the second book came out it was a little delayed but so worth the wait.  Jessica knows how to catch the readers attention not only by her words but damn let me tell you the hot sex and love story together made it so much better.

In book one you meet Beccan Cadwell one of Americas most eligible bachelors, playboy and known for building his company from the ground up.  You also meet Harper Reagan who had a dark past and thought she would never find love cause of it.  She had three really close friends that were her family Nikko, Avery and Brynn.  they helped thru everything good and bad and even the ugly.

As you get into book two it was an adventure from the beginning it was like reading a action movie with lots of action both in the bedroom and other areas of the story, you just have to read to find out.  This really was a page turner on trying to find out what was going to happen next.   Sorry for being to cryptic but I really don't want to give the story away.

During all that was going on you get to meet Duncan Peters, who is Duncan you ask well he is from Samantha Fontiens series Dragonfiles the Duncan Peters Files he is a special opps type of guy and totally hot you need to check it out.  So there is one clue about the book they needed someone with Duncan's background.  I told you it was an adventure.

Breccan and Harper (Dove) go thru a lot in the beginning in both books but it's a new relationship so things always are a little crazy right.  Breccan needs to find a way to get back his "Dove" and as much as Harper fights she knows she needs him in her life more than she realizes  it.  this love story brings you the ups and downs in relationships and life that have major outside forces trying to bring it down. Harper's past was not a good one and cause a lot of conflicts.  Harper starts to feel more like a burden then anything else with her dark past always following her and causing her friends harm.  But she is willing to risk it all even her Breccan her Adonis.

I really enjoyed reading this second book but I must warn you have a few yes I said few change of panties to get you thru this book maybe even a BOB lol.  This book is a roller coaster  ride packed with adventure. An I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Ascending Darkness
Prologue
It’s been years since I lived and breathed this way. Years since I had to wonder what would happen next. I’ve been lucky; living the good life and having whatever I wanted. I suppose I couldn’t really have it all; too greedy. It was never about money, though….

It was about being out of this life, having something more.

Living.

I don’t know if Nikko and Breccan know yet what has happened, or if they can even do anything about it. I imagine they will try and I hope they succeed, but how in the hell are they even going to find me? I don’t even know where I am or how I got here. How can two people that weren’t there do anything about it?

I look around the mostly dark room. The walls are a grayish color which looks to be from stains to the once white walls. The carpet is dark, almost a greenish color. There is a small bed in the corner with a table and a lamp that hardly sheds any light in this room. It smells musty in here, like a cemented basement.

Maybe it is a basement.

I was unconscious when they took me and woke up in this room.

I sigh and sit up on the bed so that I am facing the door. My hands are still tied with nylon rope and my wrists are raw, so it hurts to move them too much.

The door starts to open and I watch.

He walks in with the same grimy smile he always had.

I hate you!

He walks closer to the bed, looks down at me and says, “Hey, babe. You’ve been busy. Looks like it’s time to pay your dues. Pants off. Now.”
